Actually, you are both correct. I have, at various times, compared GoDaddy to both Wal*Mart and Fry's. Let's call it a tie.

To Katrina's point, I believe said designer thought a comparison to Fry's was more fitting. GoDaddy is fine if you (don't value a usable interface, or) don't have a large site (as in, you aren't installing any sort of publishing platform or CMS. Dreamhost is cheap, and while there are others even cheaper, you always get what you pay for. I use DH for my personal sites and things I need to set up in a few minutes, but I have a Joyent Accelerator for clients.

For complete flexibility, try webfaction.com. I've had my fair share of hosting providers (in fact, I still use dreamhost for shared hosting and media temple for dedicated server), but I've never seen the approach of webfaction in the way they have configured web services (you have to try it to appreciate it).

I have tons of domain names with 1and1.com --- but I do not recommend them as I am transferring domain name services to godaddy.com. Their billing process is just whack!

There are many hosting providers and if price is a factor, I'd go with dreamhost. But for a little bit more, I'd try webfaction.

I have sites hosted on 1and1.com and dreamhoast.com. I like dream host a little better, but 1and1.com is a bit cheaper. I've also hosted sites on mediatemple.com which is a little pricey but very good hosting service. Hope that helps.
